Commuting During Winter

14th November 2017

With the weather worsening in the UK and other parts of the northern hemisphere, Commute Smart Week (12-18 November) is a timely campaign which raises awareness of initiating and encouraging smarter ways for people to commute during the winter months ahead.

Key elements include:

  • Smarter working – flexible working, condensing working hours, homeworking, etc;
  • Encouraging employees to travel outside peak commuting times;
  • Remote and agile working – such as using satellite offices, drop-in centres, Wi-Fi hot spots etc, which can collectively reduce travelling to a base office location and avoid the potential dangers that are associated with commuting;
  • Virtual meetings – conducting meetings via telephones, video conferencing or other online methods;
  • Health, fitness and well-being benefits – helping to keep employee’s fitter and healthier, which can lead to a more productive, safer and healthier workforce;
  • Road congestion and safety – statistics have shown that more road traffic accidents happen on a Friday, especially during the winter, than at any other time throughout the year.

If we can collaborate to help smarter working and commuting, we can help mitigate the significant increase in deaths and injuries on the roads during the winter months. Sadly, we must remember that many of the accidents that occur involve school children.

The Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) state that they are dedicated to working to keep people safe and healthy in all aspects of their work, which includes commuting and also recognise that organisations have a responsibility to develop knowledge and to help mitigate health, safety and welfare issues for commuting employees to keep them safe and healthy while travelling.
